The Algarve has earned its reputation as one of Europe’s premier golf destinations — and it’s not hard to see why. More than 300 days of sunshine, over 40 courses spread across a compact coastline, and green fees that still offer genuine value compared to equivalent courses in the UK or Ireland. Whether this is your first trip or your fifth, there’s always something new to discover.
Here’s a practical guide to the courses worth knowing about, organised by what they do best.
The Algarve in Numbers
Before diving into specific courses, it’s worth understanding the geography. The Algarve stretches roughly 150km from Sagres in the west to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Spanish border. Most of the famous courses cluster around a 40km stretch between Portimao and Almancil — easily covered in a hire car. The Eastern Algarve, around Tavira, is quieter and better value.
Top Golf Courses in the Algarve
Quinta do Lago — Almancil
The name most associated with Algarve golf. Quinta do Lago is home to three championship courses — North, South, and Laranjal — each occupying a different section of a protected nature reserve near Faro. The North Course is considered the most challenging, with tighter fairways and demanding approach shots into elevated greens. The South Course offers a more forgiving layout, but the scenery is equally spectacular.
Green fees: EUR 120-250 depending on course and season. Book well ahead — peak season availability disappears fast.
Ombria Golf Resort — Loule
The Algarve’s newest championship course opened in April 2023 and has already earned serious attention. Designed within a restored Algarvian estate near Loule, Ombria is built on a sustainability-first philosophy — the entire layout was designed to complement rather than alter the natural terrain. The result is a course that feels rooted in its landscape in a way that newer developments rarely achieve.
Green fees typically range from EUR 90 to 160. Worth prioritising if you haven’t played it yet.
San Lorenzo Golf Course — Almancil
Consistently rated among the top 10 courses in continental Europe, San Lorenzo sits within the Quinta do Lago estate but operates independently. The back nine along the Ria Formosa nature reserve is as good as golf gets in Portugal — wide fairways give way to challenging approach shots with water in play on several holes. Green fees: EUR 120-180. A course for the bucket list.
Aroeira Golf — Lisbon / Setubal Peninsula
Strictly speaking, Aroeira is not in the Algarve — it’s 25km south of Lisbon in a protected Atlantic pine forest. But many golfers flying into Faro combine their Algarve trip with a Lisbon day or two, and Aroeira makes the detour worthwhile. Two championship courses designed in mature woodland that offers welcome shade in summer. Green fees: EUR 60-110.
Benamor Golf — Eastern Algarve
The Eastern Algarve is where golfers in the know come to escape the crowds. Benamor Golf sits near Tavira — one of the most authentic towns in the region — and offers a course that is both challenging and visually dramatic, with views toward the Spanish border hills. Better availability and more competitive green fees than the Almancil cluster. Green fees: EUR 35-65. One of the best-value rounds in the Algarve.
Pestana Algarve Golf — Carvoeiro
Pestana operates two courses in the Algarve — the Gramacho and the Vale da Pinta — both in the hills above Carvoeiro. Both offer enjoyable rounds for mid-handicappers at prices well below the Quinta do Lago bracket. The limestone terrain gives the layouts a more rugged feel different from the polished resort-style courses further east. Green fees: EUR 40-75.

When to Play Golf in the Algarve
The Algarve is a genuinely year-round destination, but the sweet spots are April to June and September to October. Temperatures sit between 20C and 27C, courses are in excellent condition, and flights from the UK are plentiful. July and August are perfectly playable if you book early morning tee times, but midday rounds become uncomfortable. Winter golf is underrated — mild temperatures, uncrowded courses, and the lowest green fees of the year.
